Mentorship is often talked about as something inherently valuable, but far less attention is given to what actually makes a mentoring relationship work. Too often, mentees enter a programme knowing they want “a mentor” without being clear on why, what they need help with, or what success would look like.

Caroline and Catherine first met through a formal industry mentoring programme, with Catherine, an experienced EA turned Chief of Staff, acting as Caroline’s mentor while Caroline was an Operations Manager aspiring to move into a Chief of Staff role. More than two years later, Caroline has made that transition herself and their relationship has evolved far beyond its original mentor-mentee dynamic.

Today, both regularly mentor others through formal programmes and informal relationships, while continuing to support, challenge and learn from one another as peers and friends. Drawing on both sides of the mentoring relationship, they will explore what mentors and mentees each need to bring to make the relationship genuinely valuable.

They will discuss how to choose the right mentor, why relevance and chemistry often matter more than seniority or title, and what good mentees need to do to make mentorship work, from taking ownership of their development to turning conversations into action. They will also explore how mentoring relationships should evolve over time as the mentee grows in confidence, changes direction, develops expertise of their own and begins to contribute back.

This will be an honest, practical conversation about mentorship beyond the coffee chats and good intentions, and what successful mentorship actually looks like in practice.
